The paper Seasonality in Marine Organic Carbon Export and Sequestration Pathways, led by UCSB postdoc Renjian Li, has been published in Global Biogeochemical Cycles. The study examines seasonal variability in marine organic carbon export and sequestration across gravitational, migrant, and mixing pathways. The results show that these pathways have strong, regionally distinct seasonal cycles, with gravitational and migrant pump export peaking in summer and the mixing pump peaking in winter in subpolar regions. These findings highlight the importance of resolving seasonal variability in observations and models of the ocean biological carbon pump.
